Canelo Álvarez Set to Face William Scull in Historic Saudi Arabia Showdown

02 May, 2025 19:21

Canelo Álvarez will return to the ring this Saturday, May 3, in a highly anticipated bout against Cuba’s William Scull, with the undisputed super middleweight title on the line. This marks Álvarez’s first-ever fight outside North America, taking place at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Mexican superstar, originally holding all four belts in the 168-pound division, lost his IBF title after failing to meet mandatory challenger Scull last year. Instead, Álvarez chose to fight and defeat Edgar Berlanga. Meanwhile, Scull claimed the vacant IBF strap with a win over Vladimir Shishkin, maintaining his unbeaten streak.

With Álvarez entering as a strong favorite (-3000), a victory could pave the way for a blockbuster clash with Terence Crawford in September. Scull, now 23-0 with 9 knockouts, poses a fresh challenge to Álvarez’s seasoned 62-2-2 (39 KOs) record.

The full fight card includes:

  • Canelo Álvarez vs. William Scull – Undisputed super middleweight title
  • Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Surace
  • Martin Bakole vs. Efe Ajagba
  • Badou Jack vs. Noel Mikaelian – WBC cruiserweight title
  • Marco Verde vs. Michel Polina
  • Brayan Leon vs. Aaron Guerrero

Broadcast coverage on DAZN starts at 6 p.m. CT, with ring walks for the main event expected around 10 p.m. CT. The event is available via DAZN pay-per-view for $59.99, or as a two-event bundle including Ryan Garcia’s May 2 fight for $89.99.

Canelo, 34, and Scull, 32, are both set for a defining night in Riyadh, as boxing fans worldwide tune in for this international showdown.
