A 38-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning when a bomb she was allegedly attempting to plant exploded in her hands in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. According to police, the explosion occurred around 5 a.m. outside a bank and caused significant damage to nearby storefronts and vehicles.
The woman, reportedly known to authorities for her involvement in previous robberies, died at the scene. Police believe she intended to place the device at an ATM before it prematurely detonated. “It appears she was trying to plant the explosive when it went off,” a senior police official told local media.
Greek forensic teams have launched a full-scale investigation, focusing on potential connections to far-left extremist groups. The incident comes just weeks after a new militant organization, the Revolutionary Class Struggle, claimed responsibility for a similar bombing near the offices of Hellenic Train and an attempted attack on the Labour Ministry in February. Those attacks caused property damage but no injuries.
The group previously issued warnings via phone before detonations and published manifestos online declaring an “armed struggle against the state.”
Authorities are now working to determine if the woman acted alone or had ties to such militant networks. The bomb squad and anti-terrorism units are continuing their analysis at the scene.
