17-Year-Old Austin Sigg Convicted for Abduction, Murder of 10-year-old Girl in Colorado
Austin Sigg, a 17-year-old from Westminster, Colorado, was convicted for the abduction, murder, and dismemberment of a 10-year-old girl in October 2012. The case began when Jessica disappeared while walking to school on October 5. Her remains were discovered five days later in a park, and further remains were found in a crawl space at Sigg’s mother’s home. Sigg confessed to the crime after his mother reported his admission to authorities .
Austin Sigg’s mother called 911, stating her son had confessed to killing the young girl and wanted to turn himself in. Sigg admitted to abducting Jessica, binding her with zip ties, and taking her to his mother’s home, where he strangled and dismembered her body. He later confessed to sexually assaulting her. Sigg also admitted to attacking a jogger months earlier.
Sigg was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, and other offenses. He pleaded guilty to 15 counts and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. Prosecutors argued that Sigg derived pleasure from pain and dismemberment, countering claims of mental illness. The grandmother of the victim described him as a “monster” who “shattered the core of our family.”
In honor of the young girl, the community dedicated a Memorial Park, featuring purple elements and butterfly motifs to reflect her “playful spirit.” The park serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, with hundreds visiting annually to honor her memory.
