A woman and a seven-year-old boy have died in a devastating car crash near the rural town of Chinchilla in south-west Queensland.

The crash happened around 4:10pm on Wednesday, May 7, on Chinchilla Wondai Road, approximately five kilometres from town. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports that a car had veered off the road and hit a tree.

Fire crews arrived to find a grey Mitsubishi Pajero with significant damage. Three people were trapped inside and had to be cut free from the wreck.

The driver, a 30-year-old woman from Elimbah, suffered serious injuries. Paramedics tried to save her, but she was declared dead at the scene.

A seven-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl, who were passengers in the vehicle, were both airlifted to Chinchilla Hospital. Sadly, the boy died shortly after arriving. The girl remains in serious but stable condition, according to Queensland Police.

Police have launched a full investigation. The forensic crash unit is working to understand how the vehicle came off the road.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or has dashcam footage to contact them as the investigation continues.
