Wheely Clever: AirCar Flying Vehicle Ready to Soar at 120mph

A revolutionary flying car that transforms into an airplane in just two minutes is now closer to commercial production — and it’s capable of soaring above traffic at speeds of 120mph.

The long-awaited production prototype of the AirCar has been revealed, following its earlier version’s appearance on The Grand Tour in 2023. During the show’s Eurocrash episode, hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May watched in awe as the car took flight, with Clarkson admitting, “Very rarely am I lost for words, but I’m lost for words.”

Developed by Slovakian company KleinVision, the AirCar has now completed over 500 takeoffs and landings, clocking more than 170 hours in the air. According to the company, the vehicle transitions from a car to an aircraft in under two minutes and can fly at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet.

Founder Stefan Klein called the project a “lifelong dream,” expressing his excitement about bringing personal flying mobility into everyday life. “Merging the road and the sky into a new dimension of personal mobility,” he said.

Equipped with a powerful new 280-horsepower engine, the AirCar now has an extended range of 620 miles. Despite resembling a sleek sports car, it features retractable wings and a tail, and needs about 980 feet of runway for liftoff.

With a projected price between £375,000 and £750,000, the car can currently accommodate two passengers. Certification for airworthiness was granted in Slovakia in 2022, though road and air approvals are still pending in other regions.

KleinVision co-founder Anton Zajac summed up the milestone: “We’re not just witnessing the future of transportation — we’re engineering it.”
