Two Elderly Women Drown While Fishing at Back Beach, South Australia

13 May, 2025 13:53

Tuesday, May 13, 2025 – Tragedy struck at Back Beach on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula when two elderly women drowned while fishing.

The victims, aged 67 and 65, were reported missing earlier in the day. According to reports, at least one of the women was swept away by a large ocean swell while fishing. The second woman may have tried to help her.

Emergency services were alerted at around 11:15 AM. A large search operation was launched immediately. The operation involved South Australia Police (SAPOL), the Water Operations Unit, and the State Emergency Service (SES).

Bodies Found Later in the Afternoon

Sadly, both women’s bodies were recovered from the water later that afternoon. Paramedics tried to revive them but were unsuccessful. Authorities confirmed the women had passed away before help could reach them.

Back Beach Known for Dangerous Conditions

Back Beach, located near Streaky Bay, is a popular spot for surfers but is considered unsafe for swimming. The area is known for strong ocean rips and rough surf. Local authorities often warn visitors to stay cautious near the water.

Earlier this year, a 28-year-old surfer, Lance Appleby, was killed by a shark while surfing at nearby Streaky Bay. That tragedy highlighted the dangers of the region’s coastline.

Investigation Underway

Police are now investigating the circumstances that led to the women’s deaths. Their names have not yet been released to the public.

Locals and authorities have expressed sadness over the incident and have reminded beachgoers to take extreme caution, especially when fishing near rocky or surf-prone areas.

More updates will follow as police release further information.
