Bicester fire: Massive Fire Breaks Out at Bicester Motion

16 May, 2025 13:01

A huge fire broke out at Bicester Motion, a historic site located on a former RAF base in Oxfordshire. The fire caused loud explosions, thick black smoke, and widespread alarm across the area.

More than ten fire and rescue crews rushed to the scene to fight the blaze. Helicopters were seen circling above as the fire grew stronger. People living nearby were told to stay inside and keep their windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation.

The fire started around 6:57 PM, according to a statement from South Central Ambulance Service. Emergency teams quickly responded and remained on-site throughout the night.

Witnesses Describe Loud Blasts and Falling Ash

A local resident, Kieran McGurk, was walking when he saw a large cloud of black smoke. He said the smoke grew darker as he walked closer. Then, he heard multiple loud bangs and saw ash falling from the sky.

“There were fire engines and police cars rushing past,” he said. “You could see how big the fire was. It was very scary.”

Location and Importance of the Site

The fire happened at Bicester Motion, a center focused on classic car restoration and engineering. It sits on a historic airfield that used to be an RAF base. According to Historic England, the site is “the most complete and strongly representative example of an RAF airbase” in the country.

More than 50 businesses operate from the Bicester Motion site. The fire could have a big impact on these companies, many of which work with vintage cars and aviation projects.

Road Closures and Public Warning

Local roads, including Buckingham Road, Skimmingdish Lane, A4421, and A4095, were all shut down. Drivers were warned to expect delays and traffic disruptions in and around Bicester.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement:
“We advise people to avoid the area and for local residents to stay indoors with all windows shut until further notice.”

Cause Still Unknown

The cause of the fire is not yet clear. Emergency services are still investigating the incident. It is also unknown if anyone was injured.

Councillor Sam Holland said, “I saw the fire from a distance. There were many emergency vehicles. I hope no one was hurt or worse.”

In a statement, Bicester Motion confirmed that the site would stay closed over the weekend.

This is a developing story, and more updates will follow as information becomes available.
