A tragic shooting incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Connor Lotterman on Friday, May 9, 2025, during a house party in Tallmadge Township, Michigan.
Connor, a student at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), was shot in the head while at the party around 11 PM. The event took place at a home located west of Grand Rapids, where approximately 10 to 20 people had gathered.
Emergency responders quickly arrived, and Connor was rushed to a local hospital. Sadly, he passed away the next day, Saturday, May 10, according to an online obituary.
What Happened
Reports from FOX 17 and WOOD TV reveal that someone on the second floor of the house fired multiple gunshots through the floor. One of the bullets struck Connor in the head.
Although early reports suggested the shooting was accidental, Detective Captain Jake Sparks from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) believes otherwise.
“The shooting was quite intentional. Multiple rounds were fired. It wasn’t just a one-shot accident,” Sparks told FOX 17.
The shooter, a 20-year-old male, has not been publicly named. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the shooting. Prosecutors are now reviewing possible criminal charges.
University Responds
GVSU released a heartfelt statement after learning about Connor’s death:
“The Grand Valley community is saddened by Connor’s tragic death,” the statement read. “On behalf of President Mantella, the Laker community extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
Aaron Haight, GVSU’s Dean of Students, encouraged students to use the university’s counseling services during this difficult time.
Gun Safety Reminder
Captain Sparks stressed the importance of responsible gun storage. He urged all firearm owners to use gun safes, trigger locks, and to store weapons separately from ammunition.
“Lock them away. Keep them secure. Accidents like this can be prevented,” he said.
Investigation Ongoing
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating. Anyone with more details is urged to call them or leave anonymous tips via 1.877.88.SILENT (745368).
GoFundMe for Funeral and Memorial
A GoFundMe page has been launched to help Connor’s family with funeral costs. The fundraiser also plans to create a memorial bench in his honor.
“Connor was taken from us too soon,” reads the campaign message. “Your support means the world.”
