According to the Fremont Fire Department, the train struck the family around 7:30 p.m. on May 18, 2025. The victims were reportedly knocked off the bridge and into the cold river waters below.

“What we think started off as a fishing trip for a family from Fort Wayne, Indiana ended in tragedy,” he said.
The family had traveled to Fremont to fish for white bass, a seasonal activity that draws people from across the U.S.
Local police, fire departments, sheriff’s deputies, and search-and-rescue divers were all deployed to assist in the emergency response. Search teams worked into the night with additional help arriving to expand efforts.

Norfolk Southern expressed condolences in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts are with those affected, their loved ones, and the community during this difficult time. We are working closely with local authorities on their investigation.”
The train resumed its journey around 10:30 p.m., following hours of emergency activity on the tracks.
