Mysterious Skull Found in North London Garden – Experts Baffled

23 May, 2025 18:38

A strange skull has been discovered in a back garden in Muswell Hill, North London, leaving experts and residents puzzled. The skull was found last week when 22-year-old Josh Woolliscroft was playing outside with Arlo, a family member’s dog.

While chasing around the garden, Arlo darted under the neighbour’s fence and came back just 10 seconds later with a skull in his mouth. At first glance, Josh feared the worst.

“I was just shocked – my first thought was that it was human,” Josh told Metro News.

Not Human, But What?

Once he got a closer look, Josh realized it wasn’t a human skull. The jaw was too large, and the teeth didn’t match. Still curious and unsure, he turned to the internet for answers.

Josh posted a photo of the skull in a bone identification group on Reddit. The initial guesses were that it belonged to a cat or a fox, common animals in the area. But users in the forum pointed out the tooth structure was not right for those animals.

Possibly a Horse or Deer Skull

The most popular opinion online is that the skull belonged to a larger animal, possibly a deer, cow, or even a horse. Some experts believe the teeth and jawbone are closest to that of a horse.

But this raises a bigger question — how did a horse skull end up in a North London garden?

Josh shared a theory he read online: during construction in the area, sediment from the River Thames may have been used in building the homes. It’s possible the skull was buried in the sediment and remained hidden for years until Arlo dug it up.

“A horse’s remains may have been scooped up and used to help lay the foundations of the property, and has only just been unearthed,” Josh explained.

The Mystery Continues

Despite several suggestions, the true identity of the skull is still not confirmed. The unusual find has sparked interest among locals and online users who are fascinated by the mystery.

Josh, a musician, says he never expected a simple day in the garden to turn into such a strange event. He’s now keeping the skull in a safe place while the investigation continues.
