Hamburg Central Station Knife Attack Leaves 18 Injured, Woman Suspect Arrested
HAMBURG, GERMANY – A shocking knife attack at Hamburg Central Station on Friday evening left at least 18 people injured, including four in critical condition. The attack happened around 6:05 PM local time on platforms 13 and 14, just as commuters gathered for the ICE 855 train to Munich.
What Happened at the Station?
Eyewitnesses were horrified when a 39-year-old woman, wearing a dark hoodie and black tracksuit pants, suddenly pulled out a knife and began stabbing people randomly. Chaos broke out as passengers screamed and tried to run.
Videos circulating on social media showed the suspect being arrested by police officers and led away from the scene. Bystanders watched in shock as law enforcement quickly secured the area.
Response and Injuries
Emergency services, including paramedics, trauma teams, and police, rushed to the scene. The fire department declared a major incident, deploying a large number of responders. Victims were treated on the platform and aboard the train, while others were taken to nearby hospitals.
According to officials:
4 people are in critical condition
6 are seriously injured
8 have minor wounds
A Red Cross crisis team was also present to assist affected families.
Who Is the Suspect?
The attacker is a German national reportedly known to the police. She has a history of mental illness and had spent time in a psychiatric facility, according to German media outlet Bild.
Hamburg police posted on X (formerly Twitter), confirming: “The person arrested is a 39-year-old woman. Based on the information so far, we assume that she acted alone.”
Investigators said there is no evidence of a political motive so far.
Aftermath at the Station
Following the attack, rail services around Hamburg Central Station were suspended, and one of the trains, the ICE on platform 14, was evacuated. The station is one of Germany’s busiest travel hubs and was crowded due to the start of school holidays.
Forensic experts worked through the evening, while multiple police and ambulance vehicles were seen parked outside.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his concern and spoke with Hamburg’s mayor, offering federal assistance. His spokesperson said, “His thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
Deutsche Bahn, the country’s railway operator, called the incident “deeply shocking” and reminded the public that weapons are strictly banned on trains and in station areas.
