9-Year-Old Emily Grace Found Dead with Father James Lee at Georgia Park
9-year-old Emily Grace and her father, James Lee, were found dead inside a parked car at a Georgia park, with investigators examining whether the father was responsible for the shooting.
Emily Grace Mayo, 9, and her father, James Lee Mayo, 37, were discovered by police at Brooklet City Park after a concerned citizen reported an unresponsive child locked in a vehicle, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Brooklet Police officers arrived around 7 a.m. Tuesday and found Emily deceased in the backseat with an apparent gunshot wound. James was found dead in the front seat from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, with a handgun resting on his lap.
Authorities have launched an investigation and are conducting autopsies on both bodies. It has not been confirmed if the same firearm or bullets were used in both deaths.
Preliminary findings suggest a murder-suicide, though no motive has been shared.
Emily’s aunt, Amber Healy, expressed her grief on Facebook, writing, “I keep thinking this is not real. This is not real life. This does not happen to people we know, especially not my own family. Not my Emily.”
She described Emily Grace as “full of life,” always smiling and affectionate, instantly loving anyone she met. Healy has started a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and asked for prayers as the family copes with their loss. The fund has raised over $30,000 as of Saturday evening.
This tragic case echoes a similar recent event in California, where a father fatally shot his 9-year-old autistic son in front of the boy’s grandfather’s home.
Nicholas Jones, 32, was arrested on December 1 on charges of murder and child abuse in the death of his son, Princeton Nicholas Jones. The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. on November 30 in Compton, near Los Angeles.
Police initially searched for a suspect, and the family appealed to the public for help. The father was later identified as the shooter, but authorities have not disclosed a motive.
Princeton’s aunt, Shamica Frasier, told Fox LA she was shocked and confused, calling the boy a loving, respectful child. She described the incident as a senseless tragedy and said the family is seeking answers.
Jones was booked at the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station following his arrest.
