Germany Warns NATO Must Be War-Ready by 2029 as Russia Threatens Europe

02 June, 2025 15:05

Germany has warned that NATO must prepare for war within the next four years. General Carsten Breuer, the Chief of Defence in Germany, gave this warning on Monday, June 2, 2025. He said Russia is building its army and weapons quickly. He also said the threat from Russia is very serious and getting worse.

Russia’s Military Build-Up

According to General Breuer, Russia is making around 1,500 tanks and four million artillery shells every year. He believes not all of these weapons are being used in Ukraine. That means Russia might be saving them for a future war with NATO. He said Russia’s goal is to weaken NATO and destroy the trust in the Western system.

General Breuer added, “Analysts think that Russia might attack NATO around the year 2029.” But he also warned that war could happen earlier. “We must be ready to fight even tonight,” he said.

Baltic Nations in Danger

The Baltic countries like Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are in serious danger. General Breuer said these countries are closest to Russia. He described it like being near a wildfire. “They can feel the heat, see the flames, and smell the smoke,” he explained. Other parts of Europe are only seeing the smoke far away.

UK Responds with Submarines

In response to the Russian threat, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the building of 12 new nuclear-powered submarines. These subs will carry Tomahawk missiles. They will also gather intelligence and support special forces missions.

The submarines are part of the AUKUS agreement between the UK, US, and Australia. They will be built to improve national security and prepare for any future war. The UK is also increasing its nuclear warhead stock.

British Defence Secretary John Healey said, “Our nuclear weapons are what Putin fears the most.”

Ukraine’s Drone Attacks on Russia

Meanwhile, Ukraine carried out drone strikes over the weekend. They targeted Russian airbases and bombers. One large strike hit the Belaya Air Base in Siberia, causing fires and damage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks destroyed 34% of Russia’s cruise missile launchers.

Ukraine also revealed secret stockpiles of FPV drones hidden inside shipping containers. These drones are used to attack Russian military positions.

NATO Urged to Act Fast

General Breuer ended his statement with a clear message. He said NATO countries must act now. “We must build our armies again,” he said. “We need weapons, people, and plans. That’s how we protect ourselves and stop war before it starts.”
