Why Maria Ryan Moved Back to Galway After Living in Australia for 15 Months?

03 June, 2025 20:27

Irish fitness influencer Maria Ryan has opened up about why she decided to return home after spending over a year in Australia. The 28-year-old from Galway lived in Australia for 15 months but moved back after realizing it wasn’t the life she had imagined.

The Dream vs. Reality

Maria said she was inspired by the popular TV show Home and Away to move to Australia. She thought life there would feel like a relaxing holiday, but the reality was different. She first moved to Sydney in September 2023. However, she found it too fast-paced and busy.

“Sydney felt more like London,” Maria explained in a TikTok video. “I didn’t do enough research before going. I thought it would be more relaxed.”

Soon after, she moved to the Gold Coast hoping for a quieter lifestyle. She enjoyed the beach views, sunrises, and friendly people. She also kept up her love for fitness with morning runs. But even with all that, something felt missing.

“I Felt Like My Life Wasn’t Moving Forward”

Maria shared that after about three months, she realized Australia wasn’t her forever home. Although the scenery was beautiful, she said it felt like being on a constant vacation. She missed the feeling of home and wanted something more meaningful in her life.

“There was a point I felt stuck. I liked the sun and the beach, but that was it. I needed more than that,” she said.

She returned to Ireland for Christmas and felt an overwhelming sense of peace in Galway. That’s when she made the decision to stay.

Not Everyone Stays Forever

In her TikTok, Maria said that most people know within a few months if Australia is the right place for them. She has lived in America, England, and now Australia. She described herself as a “hopper”—someone who moves a lot.

“I know now what feels like home,” she added. “And Galway does.”

Many people agreed with her story online. Several commenters said they had also returned home after living in Australia. Some said the experience helped them appreciate their home countries even more.

One woman from the UK wrote: “I’m in Melbourne and totally agree with you. I’ve booked my flight back home.”

Another commenter said: “Australia is stunning, but I missed my family and the small things at home.”

For Some, Australia Still Feels Like Home

While many supported Maria’s decision, some said they couldn’t imagine leaving Australia. A few mentioned that life in their home country was more expensive or harder to manage.

“I couldn’t go back. Rent and living costs are worse at home,” one person shared.

Still, Maria says she has no regrets. She feels “content” being back in Galway and has brought her love for fitness and outdoor life with her.
