Nearly three years after the tragic death of Chloe Haynes, the investigation into how the 21-year-old died remains open with no clear answers. Chloe was found crushed under a heavy wardrobe in a hotel room at Liverpool’s Adelphi Hotel in the early hours of September 10, 2022.
Chloe, described by family and friends as a kind and caring young woman, had been out for a night of fun. She was visiting Liverpool from Pwllheli, North Wales, where she worked at a holiday park. After a night out with friends, she returned to the hotel to rest but never woke up.
The initial investigation was difficult. Three men were arrested on suspicion of murder after Chloe’s body was discovered. However, police later released them without charges when it became clear that Chloe’s death was a tragic accident. Reports suggest she got confused and opened the wardrobe door, thinking it was the bathroom or the room exit. The large wardrobe then toppled over and crushed her windpipe.
Chloe’s friend, who shared the hotel room, was the one who found her. He raised the alarm and called for help. Three other men from nearby rooms rushed in to lift the wardrobe off Chloe, but sadly it was too late to save her.
The incident shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety standards at the Adelphi Hotel. Liverpool Council’s Environmental Health department launched an inquiry. They found problems with the hotel’s furniture and windows. Prohibition notices were served to Britannia Hotels, the hotel’s owner, demanding urgent safety improvements. However, after the hotel provided evidence of repairs, some notices were withdrawn.
Chloe’s mother, Nicola Williams from Wrexham, has been seeking answers ever since. She lovingly remembers her daughter as “birdy,” a nickname she gave her because Chloe was small and delicate. Nicola says Chloe loved animals, especially her dog Archie, and was growing more confident before her untimely death.
The case remains open, with no timeline for when the investigation will conclude. A pre-inquest review was recently delayed by Liverpool Coroner’s Office. Meanwhile, Chloe’s family continues to call for justice and safety improvements to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
