Valladolid Flooded After Sudden Storm, Emergency Declared Across Spanish City

04 June, 2025 14:27

A powerful downpour on Tuesday evening turned the city of Valladolid into a flood zone, bringing daily life to a near halt. Streets turned into rivers as floodwaters swept through the area, forcing authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Between 7pm and 8pm, over 200 emergency calls were made, as residents struggled with blocked roads, trapped cars, and rising water levels. Videos shared online showed people waist-deep in floodwaters, pushing stalled vehicles and trying to reach public transport.

One of the most shocking scenes captured a bridge completely underwater, with cars stuck in deep water and unable to move. Nearby, water could be seen cascading from the bridge like a waterfall, showing just how sudden and forceful the flooding became.

In some tunnels, cars were completely submerged. Emergency services from Castilla y León confirmed at least one vehicle got trapped in a tunnel. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

Despite the chaos, some locals decided to make the most of the situation. A video that quickly went viral showed two men sitting in reclining chairs in the middle of a flooded street, enjoying beers as if nothing had happened.

But for most, it was a struggle. Shopkeepers were seen trying to block water from flooding their stores, using buckets and mops to reduce damage. Meanwhile, passengers had to wade through knee-deep water just to get to buses.

In total, 16 litres of rain per square metre fell over the city in a very short period, according to local media. The sudden flood caught many off guard.

This extreme weather follows another storm that struck Valencia last month, which brought heavy hail and rain, making several towns look like snow-covered villages. It also comes after a massive blackout across Spain and Portugal on April 28, caused by a rare atmospheric event.

With no warning signs before the rainfall, emergency services are now closely monitoring the situation. Officials have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors until further notice.
