Thunderstorm Warning Issued Across England and Wales

07 June, 2025 13:18

LONDON, June 7, 2025 – The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across large parts of southern England, the Midlands, and south Wales. The warning started at 9:00 AM BST on Saturday and will stay in effect until 6:00 PM.

Heavy Rain, Lightning & Strong Winds Expected

The Met Office says 10 to 15mm of rain may fall in under an hour in some areas. Other places could see 30 to 40mm of rain over a few hours because of back-to-back storms. There could also be frequent lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds.

Unpredictable Storms

These thunderstorms are hard to predict. They are small-scale weather events, which means not everyone will get heavy rain. Some areas might stay dry while others could see a torrential downpour.

Travel & Power Disruptions Possible

Where storms do hit, there could be travel delays. The rain may cause standing water on roads, making driving dangerous. Train services might also face delays. The Met Office warns of possible power cuts and damage to buildings from lightning strikes.

Rainier Than May in Some Areas

The start of June has brought unsettled weather after a record-dry spring. England had just 32.8mm of rain in May, the driest spring in over 100 years. But now, some areas might receive more rain in one day than they did in the entire month of May.

What Does a Yellow Warning Mean?

A yellow weather warning is the lowest level issued by the Met Office. It means severe weather is possible and could cause some disruption. The Met Office looks at both the likelihood of the event and its impact.

Showers Elsewhere Too

Other parts of the UK will also see rain showers, but they are not expected to be as heavy as those in the south.
