Emily Nutley, Ohio Teacher, Sentenced to 3 Years After Inappropriate Relationship With Student

Emily Nutley, a former Catholic school teacher from St. Xavier High School, was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday. The 43-year-old admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old male student in late 2023.

Nutley pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct and appeared in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court for her sentencing.

Teacher Fired After Discovery

The school terminated Nutley’s employment in October 2023 when the incidents came to light. Authorities arrested her shortly after.

In court, she gave a brief statement. “There is no excuse for what I did. I crossed a line that should never be crossed,” Nutley said.

She also spoke about the impact on her personal life: “I’ve lost my husband, my home, and my friends. I’ve caused pain to my children.”

Judge Expected More Apology

Judge Jennifer Branch sentenced Nutley to three years behind bars. The judge said she was disappointed that Nutley didn’t speak more directly about the effect on the student.

“You pretty much ruined the rest of his high school career,” Judge Branch said. “I didn’t hear you acknowledge the harm caused.”

Student Shares Emotional Letter

A letter written by the teen was read in court. In it, he described how the experience had changed him.

“It altered my high school experience and my life,” he wrote.

“I didn’t know I was being manipulated. I now have trouble trusting people, especially adults.”

He added that even at public events, people shouted her name at him, which caused stress and embarrassment.

Divorce Filed and Counseling Started

After Nutley’s arrest, her husband filed for divorce. She told the court she is now attending sessions with professionals to understand her behavior and decisions.

She said, “I am not asking for forgiveness because I haven’t earned it.”
