Sohaib Ahmed and Daughter Manahal Die in Heckmondwike House Fire

11 June, 2025 17:59

A heartbreaking tragedy struck the town of Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire on Sunday morning, as Sohaib Ahmed, 38, and his nine-year-old daughter, Manahal, died in a devastating house fire.

Sohaib, a local taxi driver, was asleep upstairs with his two daughters when a tumble dryer caught fire in the kitchen, according to early reports. Firefighters rescued the three from the burning house, but sadly, Sohaib and Manahal did not survive.

Mother Was on Hajj Pilgrimage

Their mother, Asifa, was not home at the time of the fire. She was in Saudi Arabia performing the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj. It is believed that she has now returned to the UK to be with her surviving children and family.

Surviving Children and Family Situation

The couple’s 11-year-old daughter was seriously injured in the fire and remains in hospital. She is currently in a critical but stable condition, doctors said.

The eldest son, who was not at home during the fire, had spent the night at a relative’s house, narrowly escaping the tragedy.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation

According to West Yorkshire Fire Service, they received a call at 6:11 AM on Sunday about the fire on Russell Close, Heckmondwike. Four fire crews from Dewsbury, Spen Valley, and Morley were sent to the scene.

Two firefighters were later seen inspecting a washing machine or tumble dryer in the back garden, believed to be linked to the source of the fire.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing. They are working with fire investigators and the Kirklees District Police on behalf of the coroner to determine the exact cause.

Community in Mourning

News of the deaths has left the community in shock. Dozens of tributes have poured in from friends, neighbours, and local residents.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their extended families,” said one local.

“My heart and thoughts go out to their family and friends. I really hope the other girl makes a full recovery,” said another.
