Denis Kopanev missing in Brazil after leaving his passport at his Airbnb

A 33-year-old British tourist, Denis Kopanev, has gone missing while on vacation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was last seen on Monday, June 9, leaving his Airbnb in the Gávea neighborhood. CCTV footage shows him wearing a beige jacket and trousers, a dark baseball cap, and a white shirt.

Denis, a financial analyst from London, has both British citizenship and Russian roots. He was supposed to travel to São Paulo the next day to meet a friend from the U.S. They had planned to visit Fernando de Noronha, a popular island destination in Brazil.

His phone’s last known location was near the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, close to where he was staying. However, he never checked out of the property, and his passport and other belongings were found inside the room.

His disappearance was officially reported to the police on Wednesday. His close friend, Benone Moura, said Denis loved Brazil and visited often, including six months ago. Moura also said Denis always kept in touch with friends and family during his trips, so this sudden silence is very unusual.

The British Embassy has been contacted, and the case is now being handled by the Whereabouts Discovery Unit (DDPA) in Rio de Janeiro. So far, there has been no update on his location. His loved ones are hoping for any news and praying for his safe return.
