Who are Heer and Dheer Baxi? Sisters Among Victims of Air India Tragedy

13 June, 2025 20:04

Heer and Dheer Baxi, two young sisters in their 20s, have been named among the 241 victims of the devastating Air India crash that occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad International Airport. The sisters, originally from the UK, were returning home to London Gatwick after visiting family in India.

The trip was a joyful one—they had flown in to celebrate their grandmother’s birthday. But tragedy struck just moments after takeoff when the Boeing Dreamliner failed to gain proper altitude and crashed into a nearby medical college, resulting in one of the deadliest air disasters in recent history.

Family Mourns ‘Young Talents’

The Baxi family is shattered. Their brother Ishan Baxi spoke to The Telegraph, saying the family was in shock.
“I can’t express what my complete family is going through – shell-shocked, not coming to terms is what I can say right now,” he shared.

He described his sisters as bright, caring, and full of ambition.

  • Dheer Baxi was a fashion design student.

  • Heer Baxi worked as a project director in an investment and renewable energy company.

The sisters had lived in Singapore for a time before settling in London.

“They both had aspirations to roam around the world, tension-free, and held onto family values while embracing modern life,” Ishan added. Their last Instagram posts are now flooded with messages of condolence, including, “RIP young talent.”

Victims Include Bride and Family of Five

The crash claimed the lives of many others, each with a heartbreaking story:

  • Khushboo Rajpurohit, 21, was traveling to reunite with her husband in London after their recent wedding.

  • Sara Nanabawa, just four years old, died with her parents Akeel and Hannaa.

  • Drs. Komi Vyas and Prateek Joshi, seen smiling in a final selfie with their children, also perished. They were migrating from India to the UK.

Four medical students in the building struck by the plane also lost their lives, as well as four relatives visiting them. One British man is reported to be the sole survivor from the flight.

Black Box Recovered as Investigations Begin

Authorities have located the aircraft’s black box, a crucial step in understanding what caused the plane to crash into a doctor’s hostel moments after takeoff. Investigation teams are now reviewing flight data and cockpit recordings to determine the cause of the deadly failure.
