Minnesota Tragedy: Rep. Melissa Hortman Killed, Sen. John Hoffman Injured in Targeted Shooting
Political Violence in Minnesota: Lawmakers Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman Targeted
Tragedy has struck Minnesota as Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in what officials describe as a targeted act of political violence. The incident occurred in their home, confirmed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during a press conference on Saturday.
Hortman, known as the Speaker Emerita and House DFL Caucus Leader, had been a prominent figure in Minnesota politics. Law enforcement sources report that the couple was attacked inside their residence, one of two coordinated shootings targeting state Democratic leaders.
The second attack was directed at Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Both were seriously injured and immediately rushed to the hospital. According to Governor Walz, they have survived surgery and are in recovery.
Authorities have revealed that the suspect posed as a law enforcement officer, wearing body armor and a blue uniform. An emergency alert was issued earlier, warning residents near Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park to shelter in place while the suspect remained at large.
“This was an act of targeted political violence,” said Governor Walz. “We are working with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible will be held fully accountable. We will not allow such terror to shake our democracy.”
The investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected as the case develops.
