Woman Takes Own Life After Family Walk Passes Rapist's Home
A vulnerable rape survivor ended her life hours after unknowingly walking past her attacker’s home during a family outing, a court has heard.
A Walk That Turned Tragic
The victim, a mother of one whose identity remains protected, had been left “completely broken” after being raped by Ryan Callaghan, 33. On the day of her death, she joined her family for a walk to the beach—unaware the route would take them directly past Callaghan’s house.
Her grieving mother told Newcastle Crown Court:
- “Unknown to us, the route we took took us directly past Callaghan’s house.”
- “Her mood became extremely low. Walking past Callaghan’s house tipped her over the edge.”
- “It was months later we found out where he lived, and that day will haunt us forever.”
After asking a relative to take her home, the woman died by suicide shortly after.
A Crime That Shattered a Family
Callaghan, who denied the rape but was convicted by a jury, attacked the woman when she was “in crisis” and recently hospitalized for self-harm. Her mother stated:
- “Callaghan’s vile act on our daughter was a major factor in her taking her own life.”
- “He betrayed her trust and left my daughter completely broken.”
- “We are serving a life sentence in the knowledge of what he did.”
In a final note, the victim emphasized the rape’s role in her despair and begged her young son be told “how much he was loved.”
Defendant Shows No Remorse
Despite the victim’s death, Callaghan—who has prior assault convictions—“showed no remorse,” the court heard. His lawyer claimed he “does not accept” the verdict and highlighted his role as a father.
Justice Awaits
Callaghan, of South Shields, will be sentenced next week. Meanwhile, the family mourns a life stolen twice—first by violence, then by unbearable pain.
