Deacon Blue star James Prime has died at the age of 64
James Prime, the legendary keyboardist and founding member of the Scottish band Deacon Blue, has sadly passed away at the age of 64. The band confirmed on Thursday that James died after a short battle with cancer.
In a touching statement on social media, the band said: “We announce with great sadness that our brother, James Prime, passed away this morning after a short struggle with cancer. Thank you so much for the messages of support that you shared over the last two weeks, they meant so much to Jim, his family, and us.”
James had been rushed to intensive care just days earlier, but the cause had not been revealed until now. Fans across the world were hoping for his recovery, sending well wishes and love through social media.
Deacon Blue members — including Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond, Gregor Philp, and Lewis Gordon — had earlier shared an update on James’ condition. They revealed that he was seriously ill and being treated in hospital but had encouraged the band to continue with their tour plans.
The group will go ahead with their Great Western Road Trip tour, starting in Liverpool on September 19 and ending in Glasgow on October 11, as James had wished. He gave his blessing to the band to continue performing, even if it meant someone else stepping in for him temporarily.
James Prime was widely loved for his warm personality and powerful musical skills. He was known for iconic keyboard solos, especially in songs like “When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring).” Fans have shared emotional tributes online, thanking him for the music and memories.
James helped form Deacon Blue in 1985. The band became famous in the late ’80s and ’90s with hits like “Dignity,” “Real Gone Kid,” and “Fergus Sings the Blues.” Their emotional lyrics and strong stage presence earned them a loyal following in the UK and beyond.
Their most recent album, The Great Western Road, was released in March 2025 and included a small theatre tour. The upcoming arena shows are now expected to be emotional tributes to their late bandmate.
James Prime leaves behind a legacy of incredible music and loyal fans who will always remember him. His passing is a great loss to the world of music.
