ITV’s First Female Weather Forecaster Wincey Willis Dies at 76

LONDON – Former ITV weather presenter Wincey Willis has died at the age of 76, after living with dementia. She passed away on December 18, 2024, but the news was only made public this week.

Wincey, born Florence Winsome Leighton, became a household name in the 1980s. She was ITV’s first national female weather forecaster, known for her blonde hair, colourful jumpers, and cheerful energy.

A Bright Face on British TV

Wincey was already known in the UK before joining the national ITV team. In 1982, she presented her own show called Wincey’s Pets. She moved to ITV from Tyne Tees Television, even though she once admitted she wasn’t a trained weather expert.

Wincey quickly became a fan favourite. In 1985, she appeared on the hit show Treasure Hunt alongside Anneka Rice. That same year, she created a board game called The Weather Game.

A Life Beyond the Screen

After leaving full-time TV in 1987, Wincey focused on wildlife conservation. At one point, she even lived in a tent in Greece for six months to guard a turtle nesting area.

She returned briefly to TV in 1993 as a wildlife presenter, but largely stepped away from the public eye. She also wrote books including It’s Raining Cats and Dogs (1986) and Greendays (1990).

Remembered With Love

Screenwriter Russell T Davies paid tribute to her on Instagram. He wrote: “That’s a sad loss! She was absolutely hilarious and full of joy… we corresponded for years. What a great career! Well done, Wincey, night darling.”

Wincey was well-loved for her warmth, humour, and love for animals. She inspired many with her unique personality and passion for the natural world.
