Body of Social Activist Yawar Abbas Airlifted by Pakistan Army from Nagar Mountains
The body of renowned social activist Yawar Abbas from Gilgit-Baltistan was recovered and airlifted by a Pakistan Army helicopter on Tuesday after he tragically fell during a trek in the remote mountain region of Nagar district.
Abbas had gone missing during the hike, prompting a large-scale search operation. A joint rescue team, including the Pakistan Army, Rescue 1122, and experienced local mountaineers led by Wajid Nagri, launched a coordinated effort in the difficult terrain. After hours of intense search, the team successfully located and recovered his body from the high-altitude area.
Yawar Abbas was widely known for his peaceful activism and unwavering demand for constitutional rights for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. He often used social media platforms to raise awareness about civil liberties and governance issues affecting the region.
Despite being placed on the controversial Fourth Schedule, a government watch list used for individuals suspected of involvement in anti-state activities, Abbas was never convicted of any crime. His placement on the list was heavily criticized by human rights organizations.
Over the years, he faced repeated arrests but remained committed to his cause. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the activist community and the broader public. Tributes poured in on social media, with many remembering him as a fearless voice who consistently stood up for the rights of the marginalized.
One Twitter user wrote, “Yawar Abbas was a fighter, a peaceful soldier for our rights. His loss is unbearable. May his soul rest in peace.”
His death marks a tragic end to a passionate life dedicated to justice, dignity, and constitutional recognition for Gilgit-Baltistan.
