Ruud van Nistelrooy Leaves Leicester City After Relegation from Premier League

27 June, 2025 14:17

Ruud van Nistelrooy has officially parted ways with Leicester City, over nine weeks after the club was relegated from the Premier League.

The former Manchester United striker and PSV Eindhoven manager, aged 48, oversaw a disappointing campaign that saw the Foxes win just 5 of their 27 league matches, suffering 19 defeats.

Leicester’s relegation was confirmed with five games still left in the season, yet Van Nistelrooy remained in charge through the end of the campaign and into the summer. His departure, announced by the club as a “mutual agreement,” ends weeks of speculation.

The delayed nature of his exit has raised eyebrows among fans and pundits. Former Leicester striker Matt Fryatt described the situation in early June as “baffling” and “a mess,” reflecting widespread frustration over the club’s direction.

Leicester are now preparing for life in the Championship for the second time in three years and face additional concerns, including the threat of a points deduction after being charged with allegedly breaching the EFL’s financial rules.

More updates on the managerial search and club strategy are expected soon.
