Deputy Commander of Russian Navy Major General Mikhail Gudkov Killed in Ukrainian Missile Strike
On July 3, 2025, Major General Mikhail Gudkov, the deputy commander of Russia’s navy, died in a missile attack in Russia’s Kursk region. The Kremlin confirmed his death early on Wednesday. This strike was carried out by Ukrainian forces.
Gudkov was 42 years old. He was one of the highest-ranking Russian officers killed so far in the war. He was a Hero of Russia and had recently been promoted by President Vladimir Putin. His new role was to lead the Marine Infantry and coastal missile forces.
The missile hit a command post in Korenevo, about 11 miles from the Ukraine border. The strike happened while Gudkov was meeting with other senior officers. At least a dozen soldiers and officers died in the attack.
Russian air defenses managed to shoot down four out of eight missiles. But the others hit their targets, including the place where Gudkov was. The attack was precise and caused a big loss for the Russian military.
Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of the Primorye region, sent his condolences to the families of Gudkov and other soldiers who died. Flowers were laid in Vladivostok, where Gudkov’s 155th Marine Brigade is based.
Gudkov was honored for bravery in October 2023. He received the Gold Star of the Hero of Russia. He was awarded by then Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for his courage and leadership in the Ukraine conflict.
The strike adds to tensions between Russia and Ukraine. About 50,000 Russian troops are reportedly gathered near the border. Many fear Russia may soon invade Ukraine’s Sumy region.
Gudkov’s death is seen as a serious blow to Russian forces. It shows Ukraine’s ability to strike high-ranking officers. The war continues to cause heavy losses on both sides.
