David Mabuza, the former Deputy President of South Africa, has died at the age of 64. His death was confirmed on Thursday, though the cause has not yet been made public.

Mabuza served as Deputy President of South Africa from February 2018 to February 2023. He was also a senior leader in the African National Congress (ANC) and had a long career in politics.

From Teacher to Top Politician

David Mabuza was born in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. He trained as a teacher and worked in education before entering full-time politics. His political journey began during his school years when he became involved in the Black Consciousness Movement.

Later, he became active in teachers’ unions. He served as the Chairperson of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) from 1988 to 1991. SADTU is a key affiliate of COSATU, one of South Africa’s largest trade union groups.

Political Rise with Jacob Zuma

Mabuza’s political career grew quickly. He became the Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018. During this time, he worked closely with former President Jacob Zuma, one of his early political allies.

His influence within the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was strong, and he remained an important figure in the party for many years.

Deputy Presidency and Later Years

In 2018, David Mabuza was appointed Deputy President by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He held the position for five years and stepped down in February 2023. At that time, President Ramaphosa had even asked him to stay on for a short period to help with the leadership transition.

Since leaving office, Mabuza kept a low profile in public life.

Legacy and Tributes

David Mabuza is remembered for his long service in South African politics and his early work in education and labor rights. He played an important role in the ANC and in the development of Mpumalanga province.

Tributes are pouring in from political leaders, teachers’ unions, and citizens who remember his leadership during challenging times.

Family Life

  • Married twice: first to Ruthi Funi Silinda, and then in 2003 to Nonhlanhla Patience Mnisi.

  • He likely had up to four children. Sources confirm a son from his first marriage.

  • Born in a farming family in rural Mpumalanga. His parents were farmers, and their values shaped his early life.

Net Worth

Mabuza accumulated wealth from his political career and business ventures. Estimates place his net worth between R40 million to R100 million (US$3.8–10 million). He also had shares and property holdings.
