Finn Doering, a 23-year-old male model known for walking runways for Coach and Fendi, was held in a police cell after recording officers arresting a man at the Second Avenue F Train subway station. Doering’s lawyer says the police arrested him in retaliation for filming.
What Happened at the Subway Station?
The incident happened around 1 a.m. Police were arresting 24-year-old Tarasi Watkins, who was lying on the subway platform. Officers asked Watkins to stand up, but he became disorderly. According to the police complaint, Watkins resisted arrest by tensing his body and moving his arms.
Doering recorded the scene and questioned the officers. He asked why Watkins was being detained. One officer said it was because Watkins appeared intoxicated.
The Model’s Interaction with Police
When officers told Doering to step back, he refused. He told them, “I can speak! I can speak! I’m so sorry if you think I can’t.” The video shows police using a stun gun on Watkins while he was on the ground.
Doering kept filming closely, saying, “This is illegal!” as officers tried to control Watkins.
Aftermath and Detention
After recording, Doering was arrested. He was placed in a dirty holding cell at the Union Square subway station. Doering described the cell as unsanitary and degrading.
Police say Doering interfered with their work. However, Doering says he was only acting as a “police watchdog” to record what looked like excessive force.
Legal Response
Mark Bederow, Doering’s lawyer, called the arrest “retaliatory” and illegal. He said police arrested Doering because they were upset about him exercising his right to record public officers. The NYPD has not commented on these claims.
Doering was recommended to face charges for obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. But sources say the District Attorney will not prosecute because Doering did not break any laws and has no prior arrests.
What’s Next?
Even though charges are dropped, Doering’s lawyer is seeking compensation for the arrest.
