Phoenix, Arizona — July 8, 2025: Mexican boxer Pedro Antonio “Tony” Rodriguez was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday morning, just hours after fighting in the ring.
The 37-year-old super-bantamweight had competed on Saturday night in a six-round match at the American Royal Palace during the Brawl in the Barrio event. The bout was sanctioned by the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission and organized by Del Sol Boxing Promotions.
Found Unresponsive After Missing Airport Pickup
Rodriguez returned to his hotel after the match and had planned to meet fellow fighters for dinner. But he never showed up in the lobby that night.
Hotel staff discovered his body the next morning, Sunday, July 7, after he failed to appear for a scheduled airport pickup at 3:30 a.m. Authorities were alerted, and an investigation into his cause of death is now underway.
His Last Fight
Rodriguez lost his final fight by unanimous decision to Phillip Vella. Despite the loss, the match appeared to have ended without major injury.
Rodriguez had a background not just in boxing but also worked for the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). He had traveled from Durango, Mexico, to Arizona for this fight.
Wife Speaks Out
His wife, Karla Valenzuela, spoke about their last conversation: “He called me when the fight ended. He even made a video call from the hotel. He said he was going out to get food and coming back. I don’t know what really happened. I’m still confused. We are waiting for the report.”
So far, no official cause of death has been announced. Authorities have not confirmed any link between the death and the fight or a medical condition.
Tributes From the Boxing Community
His opponent, Phillip Vella, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram: “Truly heartbroken to find out this news. Thankful to have shared the ring with Pedro for six rounds. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Rest easy, champion.”
Del Sol Boxing Promotions also shared a message of grief: “The Del Sol Boxing family is heartbroken. Our thoughts are with his loved ones. Please respect the family and allow authorities time to complete their investigation.”
