Three men—Jakeem Rose (23), Ugnius Asmena (20), and Nii Mensah (23)—were found guilty on July 8, 2025, of setting fire to a warehouse in Leyton, east London. The building was linked to aid efforts for Ukraine and stored satellite internet equipment.
The fire, which caused about £1 million in damage, happened late at night on March 20, 2024. The UK government said the attack was carried out on behalf of the Russian Wagner Group, which is a proscribed terrorist organization in the UK.
Orchestrated by Wagner Agents
The plot was led by Dylan Earl (20) and Jake Reeves (23). Both had already admitted to planning the attack and pleaded guilty to aggravated arson. The trial at the Old Bailey revealed they were acting for the Wagner Group.
Mensah and Rose were seen on CCTV and a livestream video setting the warehouse on fire. After that, they quickly fled the scene.
Brave Effort to Stop the Blaze
The warehouse was located at the Cromwell Industrial Estate. Fire broke out just before midnight, and eight fire engines were sent to the scene. A lorry driver nearby tried to stop the fire but was unsuccessful, the court heard.
One Man Cleared
A fourth man, Paul English (61), was also on trial. He was accused of helping in the arson and receiving money from a foreign intelligence group. However, he was found not guilty by the jury.
This attack raised new concerns about foreign influence and terrorism on UK soil. Authorities say more action is needed to prevent similar threats.
