Tennis fans at Wimbledon 2025 got a sweet surprise when 18-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva flipped roles with her coach, Conchita Martínez. On Tuesday, the teenager became the coach and cheerleader as Martínez played in the Wimbledon Legends’ Doubles event.
But who exactly is Conchita Martínez, and what’s her role in Andreeva’s rapid rise?
Who Is Conchita Martínez?
Conchita Martínez is a former World No. 2 and the 1994 Wimbledon champion. She is also a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
She began coaching Mirra Andreeva over a year ago. Since then, their partnership has grown into a strong, supportive, and fun team. Martínez brings decades of Grand Slam experience, while Andreeva brings energy, passion, and incredible talent.
Role Reversal at Wimbledon
After Andreeva beat Emma Navarro to reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, she promised she would coach Martínez in return.
“I’m already thinking about a poster,” she said. “I will come to the court and support and, obviously, coach. That’s my time to get back at her.”
She kept her word. With a homemade sign that read “Let’s go! Señorita Topspin” and “You are golden,” Andreeva cheered loudly during Martínez’s legends doubles match.
Her sign was full of sparkle, strawberries, and even two Uno cards, referencing their favorite game on tour. She wore a Wimbledon-themed Panama hat decorated with tennis gear and more strawberries.
Match Result
Despite the cheering, Martínez and her partner Greg Rusedski lost the match to Katie O’Brien and Thomas Johansson, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Still, the moment highlighted the close bond between the coach and her student.
Andreeva’s Praise for Her Coach
As Andreeva prepares for her quarterfinal clash against Belinda Bencic, she shared how much Martínez means to her.
“From the first practice, I felt she understands me,” Andreeva said. “She’s a great supporter… sometimes I don’t even need to say things. She just sees it.”
She added that Martínez helps her stay calm during stressful moments, especially at big tournaments like Wimbledon.
What’s Next?
Andreeva is chasing her first Grand Slam title. She already won two WTA 1000 tournaments this season and is now just one win away from a major semifinal.
If she keeps going, she could follow in her coach’s footsteps and lift the Wimbledon trophy—just like Martínez did 31 years ago.
