British Mother Drowns in Corfu While Husband and Teenage Son Watch in Horror

A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday at Roda Beach in northern Corfu, Greece, where a 50-year-old British mother drowned in front of her husband and 16-year-old son after being swept away by rough waves.

The family had been swimming despite poor weather conditions and harsh winds. Reports from Greek media suggest that strong currents or waves pushed the couple toward a rocky area near the pier. Swimmers nearby attempted to help, and emergency services were called.

According to Corfu Press, the woman was eventually pulled from the water unconscious, while her husband was rescued earlier with minor injuries. Sadly, efforts to save the mother failed. She was transported to a private clinic, where she was pronounced dead, before being moved to Corfu General Hospital for further examination.

The husband and son, both in visible shock, were also taken to the hospital for medical attention and psychological support.

The woman has not yet been named publicly, but the UK Foreign Office confirmed the incident, stating: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Greece and are in touch with the local authorities.”

Local authorities are expected to conduct a forensic examination to determine whether the cause of death was purely drowning or due to fatal injuries from hitting rocks.

This is the latest in a string of tragedies involving British tourists in Corfu:

• Just last week, a 67-year-old British man died aboard a cruise ship docked in Corfu.

• In 2023, Hannah Emily Byrne, a 22-year-old British police officer, died from a head injury after falling during a night out in Kavos.

• A 74-year-old British man died in a quad bike accident on the island’s south side last year.

The string of incidents has raised awareness around tourist safety in Corfu, especially during times of rough weather and challenging terrain.
