Canadian PM Mark Carney Responds to Donald Trump's 35% Tariff Threat
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded firmly to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff move. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Carney defended Canada’s efforts to stop the flow of fentanyl and promised to continue protecting Canadian workers and businesses amid ongoing trade tensions.
On Wednesday, Trump sent a formal letter to Carney stating that Canada would face a 35 percent import tariff starting August 1, after the two countries failed to reach a trade agreement during the recent negotiation pause. Trump indicated the tariff may be reconsidered only “if Canada works with me to stop the flow of fentanyl.”
Carney hit back with a public statement, affirming Canada’s commitment to fighting the opioid crisis and boosting its global trade efforts.
“Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1,” Carney wrote.
He emphasized that Canada has made “vital progress” in tackling fentanyl trafficking and will keep working with the U.S. to “save lives and protect communities in both our countries.”
The Prime Minister also pointed to Canada’s broader economic plan, saying the country is focused on nationwide development and is building strong trade ties across the globe.
“We are building Canada strong. The federal government, provinces and territories are making significant progress in building one Canadian economy. We are poised to build a series of major new projects in the national interest,” Carney said.
The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as the August 1 deadline approaches.
