Vivian Spohr Wife of Lufthansa CEO Investigated After Fatal Crash Kills Gaia Costa in Sardinia

Gaia Costa, 24, died after she was struck by a SUV as she attempted to cross a zebra crossing in Porto Cervo on Tuesday
Vivian Alexandra Spohr, the wife of Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, is under investigation for negligent homicide after she reportedly struck and killed 24-year-old Gaia Costa in a road accident in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, earlier this week.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, when Costa was attempting to cross the road at a zebra crossing. Spohr, 51, was allegedly driving the SUV that hit her. Costa, who worked as a babysitter, was still alive when emergency crews arrived but died shortly after due to severe head injuries, according to reports from La Repubblica.
What Happened?
According to eyewitnesses and CCTV footage, Gaia Costa began crossing the road and waved her hand to alert an oncoming vehicle. She was then struck by an SUV driven by Vivian Spohr, who was reportedly accompanied by her daughter at the time. Spohr allegedly did not realize the crash had occurred until a passerby stopped her. Upon seeing Costa on the ground, she reportedly fainted from shock.
Emergency services arrived quickly and attempted to resuscitate Costa for over 20 minutes. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Drug & Alcohol Test Results
Ms. Spohr underwent alcohol and drug testing, both of which returned negative results, according to Italian authorities. The SUV has been seized for technical analysis, and an autopsy on Costa was conducted on Wednesday.
Legal Investigation
Italian prosecutors, led by Milena Aucone, have officially registered Vivian Spohr as a suspect in a negligent homicide investigation. Although Spohr returned to Munich, her lawyers stated that she remains fully available to cooperate with Italian authorities.
In a statement issued by her legal team, Spohr expressed her “dismay and deep regret” over the fatal crash.
“Vivian Spohr, who was involved in the tragic death, expresses her dismay and deep regret over this very serious accident,” the statement read.
Remembering Gaia Costa
Gaia Costa, a beloved local, was remembered fondly by community members. Porto Cervo’s mayor, Gianni Addis, shared condolences and highlighted her role in the community: “Gaia was a young woman who was deeply involved in the city’s social and cultural life. She was passionate about our traditions and never missed the parades of the local folk group.”
