Melbourne, July 2025 – Renowned Australian cinematographer Ron Johanson OAM ACS has passed away at the age of 75, following a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He died peacefully on Saturday, June 28, surrounded by his loving family.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Johanson was celebrated for his outstanding contributions to film, television, and advertising. He also played a pivotal role off-camera, serving as President of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) from 2008 to 2022—a period that reshaped the organization and elevated its standing both nationally and internationally.
A Cinematic Legacy Spanning Generations
Born and raised in Melbourne, Ron Johanson began his career humbly in 1965 as a teenage message boy at Crawford Productions. By 21, he had already risen to the role of lighting cameraman, showcasing talent that would soon make him one of the most respected figures behind the camera in Australia.

Ron’s contributions extended far beyond the lens. As ACS President, he was deeply committed to unity, innovation, and inclusivity in the Australian screen industry. He spearheaded the creation of the ACS national headquarters in North Sydney in 2010, established branches in every state and territory, and helped boost international ties by becoming co-president of Imago, the global federation of cinematographers, in 2021.
