Renowned Brazilian singer and actress Preta Gil, daughter of music icon Gilberto Gil, has died at the age of 50. Her death was reported on July 20, 2025, while she was receiving cancer treatment in the United States.
Cause of Death: Colorectal Cancer
According to Quem, Preta Gil passed away due to complications from colorectal cancer. She was first diagnosed in January 2023, and although the disease went into remission later that year, it returned in August 2024. The cancer had spread to two lymph nodes, the peritoneum, and a nodule in the ureter.
Legacy and Career
Born as Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira, she was deeply rooted in Brazilian culture. The daughter of Gilberto Gil, a former Minister of Culture, Preta was also the goddaughter of Gal Costa and affectionately referred to Caetano Veloso as “uncle.”
Before her music career, Preta founded a successful marketing firm. She began singing at the age of 28, driven by dreams about her late brother Pedro, who passed away in a 1990 car accident.
Preta released four studio albums: Prêt-à-Porter (2003), Preta (2005), Sou Como Sou (2012), and Todas as Cores (2017). Her notable singles include “Decote” with Pabllo Vittar and “Vá Se Benzer” featuring Gal Costa.
Television and Advocacy Work
Beyond music, Preta appeared in TV shows like Cheias de Charme, Pé na Cova, and Os Mutantes, as well as the film Ó Pai Ó.
She was also a passionate activist, known for her work in anti-racism, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s empowerment, and body positivity.
Preta Gil is survived by her son Francisco and granddaughter Sol de Maria.
