A massive flash flood hit the Thak Nala area on Monday, July 21, 2025, causing one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent years. The flood destroyed everything in its path. Multiple vehicles were swept away, and at least 17 people lost their lives, according to initial reports.

Rescue teams are still searching for several missing people. The flood also caused heavy damage to the Chilas-Gilgit section of the Karakoram Highway, cutting off thousands of tourists.

What Happened in Thak Nala?

Sources report that a white coaster van was among the vehicles caught in the flood. It was carrying a family from Sialkot, along with two household staff. A total of 17 people were onboard the van.

So far, three bodies, including that of a woman, have been recovered from the river. The rest of the passengers are still missing, as rescue operations continue.

Saad Islam and His Family Among the Victims

Among the victims were Saad Islam and Fahad Islam, known figures from Lodhran. Saad Islam owns a private hospital in the city.

Reports confirm that Dr. Mashal Saad and Fahad Islam have passed away. Saad Islam’s son is still missing. Saad himself survived the flood but sustained injuries. He is currently conscious and receiving treatment.

Rescue Efforts and Road Closures

The Karakoram Highway has been closed at several points due to landslides triggered by heavy rains. This has left thousands of tourists stranded, including many from overseas.

Rescue workers from NDMA and local authorities are working hard to recover missing people and restore road access. Officials have urged the public to rely only on government sources for accurate updates.

Dr. Muhammad Affan Qaiser, a well-known Pakistani gastroenterologist, also expressed sorrow over the loss of his friends in a social media post. Though not directly involved in the incident, his connection to the family brought the tragedy to public attention.
