Tragedy in County Fermanagh: Vanessa Whyte and Her Two Children Shot Dead

24 July, 2025 18:09

A mother and her two children were killed in a shooting on Wednesday morning in Maguiresbridge, a quiet village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

The victims were Vanessa Whyte, 45, her daughter Sara Rutledge, 13, and her son James Rutledge, 14.

A man, who lived in the same house, was seriously injured. He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast by air ambulance. Police are now treating the incident as a triple murder and attempted suicide.

What Happened?

At around 8 a.m. on July 23, police received a 999 call from the house on Drummeer Road. Officers found two people already dead at the scene. Two others were taken to hospitals. One of them died later at South West Acute Hospital.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) quickly launched a murder investigation.

What Are Police Saying?

Superintendent Robert McGowan said officers are looking at the background of the family and any possible issues.

“There is limited domestic history,” he said. “This is one of the things detectives will look into.”

So far, no one has been arrested.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness has asked anyone with information to come forward.

“If you have spoken to Vanessa, Sara or James recently, or if they confided in you, please contact us,” he said. “Even small details may help.”

Who Were the Victims?

The local community is deeply saddened.

Vanessa Whyte was described as kind and caring. Her children, Sara and James, were active in sports. They played Gaelic football and cricket.

The cricket club said in a statement, “We are extremely saddened. Both of them were talented and had lovely natures.”

Reactions From the Community

People across Northern Ireland are in shock.

Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, said:
“This is tragic and deeply distressing. My thoughts are with the family and the community in Fermanagh.”

Sinn Féin MP Pat Cullen said:
“I’m thinking of the children’s school friends. It must be very hard for them, especially as it’s the start of the school holidays.”

DUP MLA Deborah Erskine, who represents County Fermanagh, added:
“The area is stunned. This is a rural and quiet place. No one expected something like this.”

What’s Next?

The police have cordoned off the area and forensic officers are continuing their work at the scene.

The investigation will take time. Officers are urging anyone with even the smallest bit of information to speak up.

The people of Maguiresbridge are now grieving. They have lost not just three lives, but a mother and two young children who were part of the heart of their community.
