Who is Ghulam Murtaza? 50-Year-Old Man from Jhelum Valley Passes Matric Exam in AJK

Azad Jammu and Kashmir Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (AJK BISE) released its annual matriculation results. Among the many students who passed this year’s exam, one name stood out—Ghulam Murtaza Kazmi, a 50-year-old resident of Gahl Jabra in Jhelum Valley.

Murtaza achieved 598 marks out of 1200 in the matric exams, proving that age is no barrier when it comes to pursuing education. His story has inspired many across Pakistan, especially after he revealed that he had first attempted the matric exam back in 1993, but failed. Despite setbacks, he never gave up on his dream of gaining formal education.

In an interview, Murtaza shared that he had attempted the exam again in 2001, but was unsuccessful. Life’s responsibilities and challenges delayed his academic journey, but the encouragement from his children gave him new motivation.

“My son is doing BSCS, and my daughter is studying FSc. They both insisted I try again. I have always loved reading and have a strong interest in politics and newspapers,” he said.

Earlier this year, when the registration for the matric exam opened, Murtaza submitted his application and fee with the full support of his children. His daughter helped him prepare, and after months of hard work, he finally passed.

Following the announcement of his results, neighbors and relatives visited his home to congratulate him. Social media users also praised his determination and spirit, calling him an inspiration for lifelong learners.

An official from AJK BISE explained that while there is a minimum age requirement of around 13 years for students appearing in the 9th grade, there is no maximum age limit for taking the matric exam.

“Every year, we see adult candidates sitting for exams alongside children. The board considers every registered person a student, regardless of age,” the official said.

Murtaza’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to learn—and determination, family support, and a love for knowledge can lead to success, no matter your age.
