Who is Stephen Miller? Trump Aide Slams India Over Russian Oil Purchases!

04 August, 2025 13:26

During ongoing India-US trade talks, Stephen Miller, a top aide in Donald Trump’s administration, accused India of financing Russia’s war in Ukraine by purchasing oil from Moscow. He also claimed India imposes “massive” tariffs on US goods and “cheats” the American immigration system.

“What he (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia… People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That’s an astonishing fact,” Miller said.

Trump’s Trade Penalty & Support for India

Trump had earlier announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, calling it a penalty for buying Russian oil. Miller defended this move but also emphasized Trump’s good relationship with India and Prime Minister Modi.

“President Trump, all options are on the table to deal diplomatically, financially and otherwise with the ongoing war in Ukraine, so we can achieve peace,” he added.

Miller’s Background and Controversies

Stephen Miller is Trump’s deputy chief of staff and known for his strong anti-immigration views. He grew up in California and was active in conservative politics from a young age. He worked closely with Trump during both presidential campaigns and wrote Trump’s 2017 inauguration speech.

Miller was behind controversial immigration policies like the “Muslim ban” and separating children from families at the US-Mexico border. He also opposed the H1-B visa system, affecting thousands of Indian immigrants.

Immigration & Security Role

Miller also leads the White House’s Homeland Security Council, coordinating domestic immigration policy. He has advocated for more arrests of undocumented immigrants, saying:

“The country needs at least 3,000 arrests each and every day.”

More Remarks on India

In a recent interview, Miller again targeted India:

“India portrays itself as being one of our closest friends in the world; but they don’t accept our products, they impose massive tariffs on us, we also know they engage in a lot of cheating on immigration policy.”

His remarks follow similar concerns raised by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called India’s Russian oil trade a “point of irritation” in US-India relations.

India’s Response

Despite criticism, India continues buying oil from Russia. Prime Minister Modi recently said:

“Now, whatever we buy, there should be only one scale: we will buy those things which have been made by the sweat of an Indian.”
