BISP to raise Stipend to Rs 14,500 in 2026 for 10 million families

12 August, 2025 19:27

The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Pakistan’s largest social welfare program, may soon get a 20% budget boost starting January 2026. If approved, this will raise the quarterly cash stipend from Rs 13,500 to Rs 14,500, helping more than 10 million low-income families across the country.

The proposal comes at a time when rising inflation and higher living costs are making it difficult for many households to meet basic needs. The increase aims to give vulnerable families more financial security and protect their purchasing power.

Key Changes

  • Higher Payments: From January 2026, each family will get Rs 1,000 more every three months, bringing the total to Rs 14,500.

  • Bigger Budget: A 20% increase in the annual BISP budget will cover the higher stipends and keep payments going to all 10 million households.

  • Inflation Adjustments: Plans are being discussed to link payments to inflation so they increase gradually with the cost of living.

  • Better Payment Systems: The government aims to expand digital payments, open bank accounts for beneficiaries, and reduce manual processes for faster, safer transactions.

  • Extra Support Programs: More funds could also go to education, health, and nutrition programs linked to BISP.

Why It Matters
This increase will help families cope with rising prices, support local markets, and encourage children to stay in school. It’s also part of the government’s effort to modernize welfare programs.

For Beneficiaries
Current recipients don’t need to reapply — the new amount will be added automatically to their quarterly payments from January 2026. New applicants may go through updated registration and digital verification.

If implemented well, this move will be a meaningful step to support Pakistan’s poorest households and make social assistance more effective.
