Spanish Influencers Mery Caldass Denied Flight to Puerto Rico After Relying on ChatGPT for Visa Info

The influencer joked that the AI tool gave her the wrong information as an act of revenge after she insulted it
A young Spanish couple missed their dream trip to Puerto Rico this week, all because they trusted ChatGPT for travel advice instead of checking official websites.
The couple, TikToker Mery Caldass and her boyfriend Alejandro Cid, shared their story in a now-viral video on social media.
What Went Wrong?
Mery and Alejandro were stopped at the airport in Spain. They were told they could not board the flight to Puerto Rico because they didn’t have the right travel authorization.
In a tearful video posted to TikTok, Mery said she had asked ChatGPT if a visa was required to enter Puerto Rico. The AI chatbot replied “no,” so they believed it and didn’t apply for the correct travel pass.
But they were wrong.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and although Spanish citizens don’t need a visa, they do need an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to enter.
Since they didn’t have the ESTA, the airline did not allow them to travel.
Mery Blames ChatGPT
In the emotional video, Mery says: “I always check things, but this time I asked ChatGPT. It said no visa is needed.”
She also joked that maybe ChatGPT gave her the wrong answer on purpose because she had insulted it before.
“That was its revenge,” she laughed through tears.
Video Goes Viral
Their video has gained over 6 million views on TikTok.
Some people found the video funny. Others criticized the couple for not checking official government websites. Many comments said it was risky to rely on AI for legal or travel information.
One user wrote: “Who uses ChatGPT for travel visas?”
Another said: “This is why people should use real websites, not robots.”
Was ChatGPT Really Wrong?
Some users defended ChatGPT, saying the tool gives answers based on the questions asked. It’s possible the couple didn’t phrase their question clearly.
In any case, the lesson is clear: Always confirm travel rules from official sources, like your airline or the U.S. travel website.
Another AI Advice Gone Wrong
Just a day earlier, an American man landed in the hospital after following health advice from ChatGPT.
The man tried to replace regular table salt with sodium bromide, a toxic chemical used in pool cleaning. ChatGPT had told him it was a safe salt alternative.
He ended up suffering from hallucinations and paranoia due to a rare condition called bromism.
Doctors warned that AI tools can sometimes give harmful advice, especially about health and safety.

Their latest travel fail has now become one of their most viral videos ever.
Lesson Learned
AI is useful, but not perfect.
For important topics like travel, health, or legal issues, always check trusted official websites before making any decisions.
