Who is Emmanuel Menchaca? Houston Teen Shot by Neighbor While Burying Pet Speaks Out

19 August, 2025 11:53

Houston – Emmanuel Menchaca, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, is recovering after being shot three times by his neighbor while burying his pet guinea pig in Southeast Houston. The shooting happened last month while Emmanuel was with his 12-year-old brother in their backyard.

According to court documents, the suspect has been identified as John Martin Dixon, who lived nearby on Belgard Street. Police confirmed that Dixon fired multiple rounds at the two brothers, leaving Emmanuel critically injured. His younger brother escaped the attack unharmed.

Who is Emmanuel Menchaca?

Emmanuel Menchaca graduated from high school this year and had plans to start college in San Antonio this fall. Known for his love of animals, soccer, and fitness, his family describes him as a kind-hearted and selfless person who brings joy to everyone around him. He is currently focusing on recovery while coping with trauma from the incident.

Speaking publicly after a doctor’s appointment, Emmanuel said the shooting has left him living in constant fear. “Every time I have to go home, I have to worry if he’s there or not. I just can’t sleep,” he told reporters at a press conference organized by immigrant rights group FIEL Houston.

Family’s Concerns

His mother, Andrea Menchaca, expressed frustration with the delay in Dixon’s arrest. She said police have only told her that they are working on getting him into custody. “Just because my son survived, it doesn’t mean this should be brushed aside,” she said.

The family says they feel unsafe while the suspect remains free. Emmanuel’s younger brother, who was with him during the shooting, is also struggling emotionally. Andrea says she is trying to reassure him but admits it’s difficult when the law isn’t giving her family the protection they need.

Suspect Faces Felony Charges

Police confirmed that Dixon faces two felony counts. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office explained that officers needed time to investigate before making an arrest.

Cesar Espinosa, executive director of FIEL Houston, said the shooting wasn’t linked to racial issues but warned that the case highlights how easily victims can be forgotten without public attention. “We want people to understand the heavy toll this is taking on their family,” he said.

Neighbors reported that the families were cordial but not close. Espinosa noted that they had no history of conflict before the shooting.

For now, Emmanuel’s dreams of starting college are on hold. His main priority is healing from the attack and regaining a sense of safety while his family pushes for justice.
