Who is Zarina Marri? Truth Behind Long-Disputed Story By Munir Mengal
A new propaganda campaign has resurfaced, centered around the long-disputed story of Zarina Marri.
For years, Munir Mengal has repeated Zarina Marri’s narrative at international forums. His NGO, Baloch Voice Association, is recognized for its anti-Pakistan stance. According to Mengal, a female teacher from Kohlu, Zarina Marri, was arrested in 2005 and subjected to abuse at a detention center in Karachi.
However, independent sources and ground evidence have consistently rejected these claims. In Kohlu’s tribal society, the disappearance of any woman cannot remain hidden. No local testimony or record exists to support the story. The Education Department has confirmed that no teacher named Zarina Marri is listed in official records.
Furthermore, no institution by the name Girls Middle School Kahan exists in government documents. Salary records from 2004 to 2007 also contain no reference to Zarina Marri. The only matching entry is of Zarina Nargis, who worked as a teacher at Girls High School Azad Shehr. Other teachers named Zarina were recruited years after the alleged incident.
School officials in Kohlu have also denied the story. The principal of Government High School Kohlu stated, “The story of Zarina Marri is false. No such female teacher ever existed.”
Authorities reiterated that past investigations have already proven the Zarina Marri case to be a fabricated narrative designed to malign Pakistan. Officials emphasized that senior journalists and human rights organizations should refrain from becoming part of propaganda campaigns without verifying facts.
