On Thursday, September 4, 2025, a 16-year-old girl was left in a critical condition after being mauled by a dog at a home in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Emergency services were called to Broughton Street around 11:30 am following reports of the attack. When paramedics arrived, they found the girl with severe injuries to her head, neck, and upper body.

According to police, several passers-by rushed to help. They managed to pull the dog off the teenager before calling for help. Paramedics gave her urgent treatment at the scene before she was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed that the incident happened while the teenager was visiting a friend’s home. The dog, a large 10-year-old animal, lived at the property.

NSW Police said in a statement that the dog was destroyed at the scene with the consent of its owner. Officers from the Hunter Valley Police District and rangers from Singleton Council also assisted in handling the case.

Investigations are now underway to determine how the attack unfolded and whether further safety measures will be considered in the community.

Police have urged residents to remain cautious and report any aggressive animal behavior.

This tragic case has sparked fresh debate over dog safety laws and the responsibilities of pet owners in New South Wales.
