Who Is Carl Bhojraj? Is Netflix’s Inspector Zende Based On True Story?

05 September, 2025 12:33

Netflix’s latest release, Inspector Zende, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Jim Sarbh, has caught the attention of crime thriller enthusiasts. Released on 5 September 2025, the film explores the story of a police officer attempting to capture the notorious criminal Charles Sobhraj, also known as the “Bikini Killer” or “Swimsuit Killer.”

But is the film really based on true events?

Inspired by Real-Life Heroism

Inspector Zende draws inspiration from the life of Mumbai Police officer Madhukar Bapurao Zende, who arrested Charles Sobhraj not once, but twice during the 1970s and 1980s. In the film, Manoj Bajpayee plays Madhukar Zende, while Jim Sarbh portrays Karl Bhojraj, a fictional character inspired by Sobhraj.

True Story of Madhukar Zende

Madhukar Bapurao Zende served in the Mumbai Police from 1959 to 1996. He gained fame for his bravery and intelligence, particularly for capturing Charles Sobhraj, a serial killer accused of murdering at least 50 tourists across Asia in the 1970s. Sobhraj, nicknamed “The Serpent” and “The Bikini Killer,” became infamous for his cunning and ability to evade authorities.

Zende first arrested Sobhraj in 1971 at Mumbai’s Taj Hotel. According to reports, Zende and his team conducted several days of surveillance outside the hotel. Sobhraj, who was planning a major robbery, was caught with weapons and hotel receipts, which also led to the capture of other gang members.

Although this arrest brought Zende widespread recognition, Sobhraj later escaped from Tihar Jail in Delhi by giving guards intoxicating sweets.

In 1986, when Sobhraj returned to India, Zende tracked him down in Goa. With help from locals, including a key tip from Mapankar, who had spotted Sobhraj’s “Peacock Green” motorcycle, Zende located him. Additional information came from Menizes, an employee at Panaji’s Central Telegraph Office, who noted that foreigners often used the O’Coqueiro restaurant for phone calls. On 6 April 1986, Zende arrested Sobhraj at the restaurant, using a rope provided by the staff due to the absence of handcuffs.

Zende’s courage earned him national acclaim. Beyond capturing Sobhraj, he also took action against other notorious criminals such as Haji Mastan and Arun Gawli. For his service, he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service in consecutive years—a rare achievement in Mumbai Police history.

Fictional Elements in Film

While Inspector Zende is inspired by real events, it includes creative liberties. The film renames Charles Sobhraj as Karl Bhojraj and incorporates dramatic elements for entertainment. Director Chinaye Mandlikar also presents the story as a crime comedy, deviating slightly from historical events.

Nevertheless, the film honors Zende’s bravery and offers viewers a glimpse into the workings of the Mumbai Police in the 1970s and 1980s.
