Former BBC Weather Presenter Jay Wynne Dies at 56 After Illness
Former BBC weather presenter Jay Wynne has died at the age of 56 after a long-term illness. His brother, Matthew Wynne, confirmed the sad news to BBC News.
Career at BBC Weather
Jay Wynne joined BBC Weather in October 2000. He quickly became a familiar face, presenting forecasts on BBC News at Ten. Known for his calm style, Jay explained complex weather systems in a way that was easy to understand.
His brother Matthew paid tribute, saying: “Jay had a gift for gentle clarity, making forecasts feel accessible and engaging. We will miss his wisdom, generosity, and dry sense of humour.”
Passion for Sports and Music
Outside work, Jay was a keen skier, golfer, and musician. He also loved travelling and often combined his sporting passions with his journeys abroad.
Education and Early Career
Jay’s love for weather began while studying Environmental Geography at the University of Aberdeen. Later, he completed a Master’s degree in Applied Meteorology at the University of Reading.
Before meteorology, he tried different paths. He first studied civil engineering but left the course after two years. He then worked as a technician on a North Sea oil rig for three years.
Jay also worked as an English teacher in Fukuoka, Japan, before returning to the UK for further studies.
Dedication to Forecasting
In a 2011 interview with the Radio Times, Jay revealed how dedicated he was to accurate forecasting. He often stayed awake after night shifts to watch the sunrise and check his predictions.
“At night it’s difficult to tell cloud types on satellite pictures. I liked to see if I was right – more often than not, I was.”
Met Office Training
Jay trained with the Met Office, which included a 14-month programme and a six-month placement at RAF Northolt. His training prepared him for a career that touched millions of viewers in the UK.
A Respected Broadcaster Remembered
Jay Wynne will be remembered not only as a skilled weather forecaster but also as a warm personality who inspired trust among viewers. His colleagues, family, and fans continue to share their tributes.
