China’s Public Toilets Now Require Watching Ads to Get Toilet Paper, Draws Backlash
Beijing, Monday, September 23, 2025 – A new rule in China’s public toilets has left many people shocked. Some restrooms now require users to watch advertisements before getting toilet paper, The Metro reported.
How the System Works
Videos on social media show users scanning a QR code on the toilet paper dispenser. After watching a short ad, the machine releases a limited amount of paper. Those who want to skip the ad can pay 0.5 RMB (about Rs 5) for instant access.
Authorities say this step was taken to stop people from wasting or stealing public toilet paper. In many cases, people were found taking large amounts for personal use.
Criticism Over Hygiene and Accessibility
The move has triggered heavy criticism online. Critics have called it “dystopian,” pointing out that people may face problems if their phone battery is dead, if they have no internet, or if they don’t have spare change. In urgent situations, this could leave people without access to toilet paper.
Not the First Time in China
This is not China’s first unusual measure to control toilet paper use. Back in 2017, Beijing’s famous Temple of Heaven park installed facial recognition toilet paper dispensers. Those machines gave a fixed amount and forced users to wait nine minutes before they could get more.
Public Reaction
Officials insist these systems reduce misuse. But many users say they now prefer to carry their own tissues to avoid the inconvenience and embarrassment. Online, the debate continues with many questioning if such measures are really practical in everyday life.
